Western Governors urge the House of Representatives to pass the Good Samaritan Remediation of Abandoned Hardrock Mines Act of 2024

In correspondence with House leadership, Western Governors expressed support for the Good Samaritan Remediation of Abandoned Hardrock Mines Act of 2024. “Hardrock mine reclamation is vitally important to the health of western communities and ecosystems and the pilot program proposed in the bill would remove one of the main impediments preventing Good Samaritans, such as state agencies, local governments, nonprofit organizations, and industry partners from cleaning up abandoned mine sites,” reads the letter of October 21, 2024, signed by New Mexico Governor and WGA Chair Michelle Lujan Grisham, and Utah Governor and WGA Vice Chair Spencer Cox. “We urge the House of Representatives to pass H.R. 7779 to address liability concerns for Good Samaritans and accelerate the pace of mine reclamation.” Western Governors have supported the creation of legal protections for Good Samaritans since at least 1995.
