Western Governors express support for Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) reauthorization

In correspondence with congressional leadership, Western Governors expressed their support for legislation to reauthorize the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA), which offered compensation to individuals who contracted certain types of cancer and other serious diseases after being exposed to radiation from nuclear weapons tests or from work in the uranium industry. The June 30 letter, signed by New Mexico Governor and WGA Chair Michelle Lujan Grisham and Utah Governor and WGA Vice Chair Spencer Cox, calls for the reauthorization of RECA and for expanding the definition of “affected area” to include further states and territories impacted by radiation exposure. “Western Governors support maintaining and funding RECA and the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program, expanding them to more accurately include the affected populations of downwind states and defense production workers, and extending them to ensure that individuals receive compensation for the effects of these national security radiation exposures,” reads the letter.
